Draft delimitation of BBMP wards notified

Bangalore: The State Government on Wednesday set the ball rolling for elections to the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) council by issuing a notification on the draft delimitation of wards.

While the recent amendment to the Karnataka Municipal Corporation Act, 1976 stipulates that the maximum number of wards in the jurisdiction of the BBMP could be raised to 200, the Government has increased their number to 198. The H.D. Kumaraswamy Government raised the number of wards to 147 from 100 in January 2007. Objections to the draft delimitation have to be submitted to the Deputy Commissioner of Bangalore Urban district by June 30.

The delimitation has been carried out on the basis of population: one ward for a population ranging between 25,000 in far-flung areas and 35,000 in densely populated areas.

Sources in the secretariat said that the roster of reservation for the wards, apart from reservation for women, would be finalised soon.

According to the notification, the number of wards in some of the Assembly constituencies in Bangalore varies between nine and four. A small area in the jurisdiction of the Anekal Assembly constituency also forms part of a new BBMP ward.

Principal Secretary to Government, Department of Urban Development, D. Thangaraj said people could study the details on the Web-enabled GIS database. Following is the list of Assembly constituencies in the BBMP jurisdiction and the number of wards therein: Yelahanka (4), Krishnarajapuram (9), Byatarayanapura (7), Yeshwantapur (5), Rajarajeshwarinagar (9), Dasarahalli (8), Mahalakshmi Layout (7), Malleswaram (7), Hebbal (8), Pulakeshinagar (7), Sarvagnanagar (8), C.V.
